Homelands Open Call

Homelands Open Call

Submit by June 11, 2026, 11:59 pm EDT

We are thrilled to launch a call for research proposals as a part of our Homelands cycle, inviting artists, architects, researchers, filmmakers, scholars, and multidisciplinary practitioners to submit a research proposal that will be presented at Storefront during the Homelands symposium in early 2027. Submissions will also be considered for print publication in the Homelands Reader, co-published with Inventory Press.

Homelands focuses on the political dimensions of memory, through artistic practices that make and remake connections to place. At a moment when questions of territory, sovereignty, and belonging continue to intensify in and beyond the United States, Homelands offers a critical space for reflection. This research cycle also asks audiences to consider memory as both a tool for reclaiming space and a means of asserting or resisting power—shaping, if possible, the understanding of what it means to remember, and to be remembered.

We welcome submissions of in-progress work or project proposals. The Open Call is designed to support the selected project’s research and development. Diverse forms of practice, including video, performance-based work, installation, architectural ideas, writing, and other media are encouraged, as well as collaborations across different professional fields and practices.

The selected proposal will receive a $5,000 artist fee as well as curatorial and editorial assistance from Storefront. Storefront is committed to determining the successful project through an anonymized review process by a jury of curators, scholars, and leading cultural practitioners. Projects will be evaluated based on the strength and originality of their ideas, the author’s depth of engagement with the subject matter, the clarity and coherence of the writing, and the work’s alignment with Storefront’s broader mission.

About Homelands

Homelands is a long-term research cycle and exhibition series which delves into the political dimensions of memory—examining what is obscured or distorted in the dominant record—through the work of artists and architects who unmake and remake their connection to place. Unfolding through four exhibitions, two performances, a public program, radio series, publication, symposium, and traveling research summits, this long-term research cycle will commission projects by Sertão Negro, Alison Nguyen, Thandi Loewenson, Sim Chi Yin, Petrit Halilaj + Ars Atelie, Danielle Dean and Alia Farid. Homelands invites audiences to consider memory as both a tool for reclaiming space and a means of asserting or resisting power—shaping, if possible, the understanding of what it means to remember, and to be remembered.
